Concluding March 2024

random notes from group crit with Celina, Crystal, Jade & chat with Jacky

I liked that the photo is “eaten away” by humidity/ poor storage

and that the photo stuck together

Video: Two old photos stuck together due to humidity, a pair of hand is carefully separating the photos, rotating and peel gently on each side. The sound is like peeling sticky thing off a surface. Finally the photos are separated with minimum damage.

I browsed through old family photos and picked out those that seems interesting to me and mapped them as follows:-

Studies of old photo from family album for this residency project
[Image: Two old photos with severe mold and loss of details, showing only silhouette of human. These texture rendered the person anonymous. Notes written: "texture", "anonymous"]

[image: Three photos of Asian baby, one with spiky hair lying on a red glossy bed and pillow, one being embraced gently by a child, and another sitting in front of disposable diapers. All the babies are the artist herself, Pey Sien. Notes written: "baby me"]

[Image: An asian women in her 20s, volume wavy hair slightly over the shoulder, wearing stripes motifs dress, leaning against an arched opening, with a potted plant in front of her. It's the feeling of youth and love. She is the artist, Pey Sien's mother. Notes written: "who took the photograph?"]

[Image: Two old photos showing an Asian couple at their wedding tea ceremony, serving tea to their elder relatives, surrounded by family members. Another photo is low angle candid portrait of the Asian couple. The couple is the artist, Pey Sien's parents. Some blinking notes highlights the "photographer", camera "flash", and the "camera view"]

[Image: The top image is of small group wedding portrait of 9 person including the Asian couple. The couple is seating in front row, with 7 members stood behind them. The couple is the artist, Pey Sien's parents. Notes next to it written: "parents' pre-wed photo". While the image below is an even larger group wedding portrait with over 30 persons, the couple is seated in center of first row, this photo seems a generation older, hinted from their traditional Chinese outfit and hairstyle, compared to the previous. Notes written next to it: "idea of wedding as important life event worth documenting. (found this in the family album but not sure who are them)"]

[image: On our right are three old photos of an Asian child around 5/6 years old, standing infront of a lighthouse, playing in a park, and soaking in the swimming pool respectively. Notes written, "child=naive=happy". On our left are a black and white photo of a person sitting on chair, staring at a dress hung from above, and a colored photograph of a person wearing white, lying and hanging on a bent tree trunk. All person in photos are the artist herself, Pey Sien. Notes written, "self portrait"]

thinking about

我在我妈妈生我的年纪 (I’m at the age where my mom gave birth to me)

“ Talking about mom in relation to myself?

photographic property?

womanhood & my practice?

understand my younger self?

modesty? shame? ”

“ [projection mapping] mask texture onto her to hide identity

focus on video/ audio of interview mom

adobe after effects for short video ”

“ mother // me

daughter-in-law // daughter

working housewife // artist

no control of picture // in control of picture

masking // take the mask off “

{ 我竟然在我妈妈生我的年纪 (I’m at the age where my mom gave birth to me) }

why is this shocking to me?

为什么现在是一回事?why the sudden realization?

难道是因为吗?(Is it because of “I“?) I’m so self centered and egoistic.

“ 祝你找到现今33岁的你和妈妈当年33岁的连接 ”
(wish you find the connection between the 33 years old you now and your mother then)
