Three-month online residency designed specifically for artists looking to consciously shape their practice to be more accessible, self-reflexive and inclusive. The residency supports artists to integrate access in their work, treating it as an integral part of their creative process rather than an afterthought.

RESIDENCY

About the residency

In Transit’s three-month online residency invites artists to embed accessibility as a fundamental part of their creative process. Designed for creatives seeking to make their practice more inclusive and self-reflexive, the residency provides a supportive space for research, experimentation, and development.

This artist residency encourages artists to explore different access strategies while evolving new or existing work. Residents share their progress through online open studios, fostering dialogue, professional networking, and public engagement.

We hold regular Open Calls for artists, but we also accept expressions of interest year-round for those who wish to self-fund their participation.

What you will receive as a resident artist

  • Online peer-to-peer sessions with In Transit curators, artists and guest arts professionals
  • Workshops on arts access and inclusive practice
  • Tailored 1:1 feedback sessions for continuous support
  • A dedicated online open studio to share research, works in progress, and reflections
  • A final online group exhibition showcasing work developed during the residency
  • Induction and support in using the online studio, with additional consultation with our web designer where needed.
  • Promotion and marketing of your work throughout the residency period
  • Training and guidance on how to make your work accessible online and in person

What we ask from you as a resident artist

  • Actively participate in peer-to-peer sessions and 1:1 meetings
  • Post weekly updates to your online studio; this might include work-in-progress, reflections or research
  • Share work-in-progress or completed pieces shaped by your access explorations in the final group exhibition
  • Commit to accessibility when posting on our website by following our guidance on practices like alt text, audio descriptions, heading styles, captions and accessible hashtags

How to join

There are three ways to join the residency:

Open Calls (Fully funded)

We hold Open Calls at specific times of the year where selected artists receive full funding to participate. Keep an eye on our website or sign up for our newsletter to stay updated on upcoming application opportunities.

Self-Funded Participation

If you’d like to join outside of an Open Call, you can self-fund your participation through one of the following payment options:

  • Pay in full: £1000 (save £120)
  • Pay in instalments: 4 payments of £300 per month (total £1,200)

Our fee structure is designed to balance affordability with fair pay for faculty. As a non-profit organisation, all income goes toward providing grants for artists to participate in our programmes and improving accessibility on our platform.

To express interest, email us at info@intransit.space with:

  • Cover: Name, Location, Website
  • About your artistic practice and achievements [250 words]
  • Why you’re interested in the residency
  • What you intend to explore during the residency – it doesn’t have to
  • Any specific access needs or support you may require

We’ll review your submission and get back to you with next steps.

Sponsorships & External Funding

We encourage artists to seek external funding such as grants, institutional support or sponsorships. If you’re applying for funding and need a letter of support or additional information about the residency, feel free to reach out. We’re happy to assist with funding applications where possible.

Please note:
The programme is curated and selection will be based on the following criteria:

  • Strength of your proposed idea for the residency
  • Compatibility with other artists and their work in the programme
  • Track record and experience in your practice
  • Suitability of your medium or art form for the residency cohort
  • Availability for a specific residency period
