This opportunity is for artists working with moving image at any stage in their career, offering a half-grant worth £400 for our three month online training residency at In Transit from 3 April – 30 June 2023. In Transit’s training residencies provides artists the opportunity to receive accessibility training in relation to the arts, have a platform and share artwork, develop new connections, receive curatorial and accessibility support in producing web-accessible work and build a new network.
The training residency is semi-flexible and can be built around your other commitments, allowing you to create, add and participate according to your schedule. There will be scheduled sessions for artists to learn about accessibility and discuss the development of work with our curators and as a group.
What we offer as part of the programme
- Over 250 minutes of accessibility training by art professionals, leading accessibility specialists and disabled artists. The training is accompanied with short assignments to encourage artists to apply what they have learned into practice. Artists will receive tailored feedback and guidance.
- Access to our curators for support and advice via group and 1-1 meetings
- An online exhibition of your work at the end of the residency programme as part of a group show with other artists in the residency
- Dedicated online studio where you can add your own work in progress, production and research. You will have the choice in how you want it published, as well as to promote your work using the back-end of the website. You will receive a dedicated login to access and edit these areas.
- Induction and support in using the website with additional consultation with our web developer where needed
- Promotion and marketing of your work throughout the residency period using our network to promote your residency and final exhibition/showcase at the end of the programme
- Support in making your work accessible online – working with accessibility specialist(s) and our in-house curator.
What we expect from you as a participating artist
- To contribute to and participate in the programme by attending group and 1-to-1 meetings as well as the training workshops
- Complete the short tasks accompanied with the accessibility training
- To add work to your studio and research pages at least once a week
- To participate in a final exhibition, contributing work you have made during the residency to the exhibition
- To make your additions to your online studio accessible by following our guidelines, using access streams when possible (such as alt text, audio descriptions, heading styles, captions, accessible hashtags, etc)
Selection and Eligibility
We are offering one half-grant worth £400, open to artists working with moving image at any stage in their career. This half grant is applied directly to our programme fee of £800, meaning the selected artist must be able to pay the remaining £400.
Although support will be provided, the selected artist is expected to be proactive and self-motivated in leading their research and production of their work. The artist should also engage discursively with In Transit’s mission to develop work(s) that is accessible. With this in mind, applicants should submit a project proposal within their application, outlining their specific research interests and intentions for the residency.
We encourage applications from all backgrounds. Arrangements could be made with In Transit to provide access support if necessary.

How to apply
The Closing Date for this open call is is 11.59pm (GMT) on Friday, 17 March 2023
If you would like to apply, please send us the following:
- An artist’s statement describing your practice and areas of interest (up to 250 words)
- A minimum of three images (or equivalent extracts from videos, sound work etc…) of recent work, with captions/a short description if necessary.
- A simple proposal outlining your plans, if you were to be offered the residency – this could be a new work or work in progress (500 words max). This proposal does not have to be definitive and can change during the course of the residency.
- A cover sheet with name, e-mail address, social media links, and website if available, plus confirmation that you will be available from 3 April – 30 June 2023 , if selected.
