Creative Access Lab

Removing Barriers

Removing Barriers is In Transit’s five-week online course combining pre-recorded training and live workshops on disability awareness, accessible writing, image and video access, audio description, and inclusive digital content. It was developed in collaboration with Minnie Scott (former Interpretation Curator at Tate), Anne Hornsby (Director of Mind’s Eye Description) and Andrew Ronksley (digital accessibility specialist).

Each week introduces a focused module with a practical assignment designed for artists to apply access methods directly within their creative practice. Participants share work through an online forum, supporting peer exchange and feedback.

Learning to Practice

In Transit Residency

In Transit’s residency combines the online course, Removing Barriers, with live workshops, group crits over three months. Artists have their own online studio space to share research, experiments and work in progress. This creates an ongoing feedback loop where ideas are posted, discussed and refined over time.

We shape workshop topics around the cohort of artists taking part and what they’re working with. Our workshops have covered touch tours, sound captioning, projection mapping, language as medium and haptic technology.

Exhibitions

Each residency concludes with an online exhibition, and in some cases an in-venue exhibition. The exhibitions present work and experiments developed throughout the programme.

In Transit works with artists throughout the process to consider how their work communicates across different contexts, including format, audience experience, access tools and how to maintain the integrity of the work across physical and online environments.

Artists and organisations

Professional development

In Transit delivers training with artists and cultural organisations, working directly with how access operates in their structures and everyday practice. This includes how people communicate, make decisions, plan budgets and organise venues and timelines.

We have delivered this work with Leeds Beckett University, YDP, Kakilang, London Sculpture Week (UK); EWERK (Germany); Telekom Muzium and Maybank Foundation (Malaysia).
