Part of Centering Contemporary Artists in Historic Places: Building & Sustaining Artist Residencies, a six-part international online seminar series spotlighting more than 20 historic artists’ homes and studios and the contemporary artists they support across the US and Europe.
Invited by Historic Artists’ Homes & Studios, Celina Loh shared In Transit Space CIC’s experience of developing online residencies and digital studios, exploring how working online can shape both artistic practice and the ways artists come together.
The talk reflected on how these formats enabled disabled artists from different parts of the world to gather, learn about access through practice, share knowledge and make work from home. Beyond making participation possible, the residencies created space for artists to collaborate, exchange experiences and build solidarity across geographical distances.
It also explored how physical artworks might be translated into digital space without becoming just documentation of an original work. What could it mean to encounter a work online on its own terms? How might digital space offer different ways of making, experiencing and engaging with art?
