Rethinking captions through sound, culture and context
A workshop for BFI staff members
What can sound tell us about a place, its culture and its history? And how can we capture these details through captions and subtitles?
Celina Loh (In Transit Space) led this interactive workshop for BFI, exploring creative approaches to sound captioning. Drawing on sounds specific to Southeast Asian contexts, participants worked in groups to interpret what sounds might tell us about a place, a moment or an experience, and how these meanings could be translated into captions. Together, they explored how choices in language, timing and presentation can convey emotion and atmosphere, and how creative approaches to captioning can open up different ways for Deaf and hard of hearing audiences to experience film.
