Designed and developed by Celina Loh, In Transit in 2024

Removing Barriers is a five-week online training programme designed and developed by Celina Loh (In Transit) to help artists and curators integrate accessibility into their creative practice. Combining self-paced lectures, practical assignments, online discussions and group workshops, the programme explored how artists could better understand their audiences, identify barriers to participation and develop more accessible ways of making and presenting work.

Across five modules, learners explore disability awareness and assistive technology, accessible writing and formatting, image and video accessibility, audio description, and accessible websites and social media. Each module paired specialist teaching with practical assignments, giving participants the opportunity to apply what they learned to their own work and receive tailored feedback through an online forum.

The programme brings together contributions from disabled artist Charlie Fitz, digital accessibility specialist Andrew Ronksley, interpretation specialist Minnie Scott (former Interpretation Curator at Tate), audio description pioneer Anne Hornsby (Director of Mind’s Eye) and In Transit’s founding director, Celina Loh. Their combined expertise connected lived experience with practical approaches to accessibility, interpretation and digital technologies.

The course combined practical guidance with opportunities for learners to test ideas in their own work, from writing image descriptions and captions to reviewing website accessibility and planning audio-described experiences. This gave participants a foundation to continue developing more accessible approaches within their own practice.
